Roses are a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. The word rose comes from French, itself from Latin rosa. There are over 100 species with most native to Asia, and smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp thorns. The saying, “A rose, is a rose, is a rose” is all but true, for not all roses are the same. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colors ranging from white through yellows and reds. Roses instill the feeling of love and adoration in us. They are a beautiful flower with an intoxicating aroma that tickles your senses of sight and smell. It’s no wonder that it’s a Valentine’s Day favorite! Red roses, as we think of them today, are the traditional symbol for love and romance. Red roses continue to be the most popular way to say “I love you” to someone special.
Pink roses are a symbol of grace and elegance, the pink rose is often given as an expression of admiration.
White roses represent innocence and purity and are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings. The white rose is also a symbol of honor and reverence, and white rose arrangements are often used as an expression of remembrance. The bright, sunny color of yellow roses evokes a feeling of warmth and happiness. The warm feelings associated with the yellow rose are often akin to those shared with a true friend. As such, the yellow rose is an ideal symbol for joy and friendship.
