Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Dipped in the instincts of Heaven,

Robed in the garments of earth,

Maiden and Mother and Queen,

Wearing each crown at thy birth:

Threefold thy gift to the world,

Pluck’d from God’s ripening sky,

Tending the altar of life,

Kindred to angels on high.

-“Woman,” Thomas O’Hagan

The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated today, September 8th, nine months after the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Blessed Virgin’s parents, St. Ann and Joachim, were an aging couple praying for a child. Mary’s birth was miraculous, as she was conceived without sin (Immaculate Conception), an exclusive grace God bestowed upon her because she was predestined to be the mother of the Incarnate Son of God. The birth of the Virgin Mary ushers in the dawn of the redemption of the human race through Jesus Christ. – The Catholic Company

Mary, the Mother of God, was gifted with many graces and trained in faithfulness.  She believed by faith and she conceived by faith.   God had a plan for Mary before her conception and her gifted graces helped her to conform to the plan.  When she was approached by the angel Gabriel she didn’t hesitate…her YES was immediate.  Her magnificat spoken during her visitation with Elizabeth was her perfect trust in God’s plan. -“little sins MEAN A LOT” by Elizabeth Scalia

Thanksgiving for Mary, Our Mother

O Jesus, Divine Master, I thank and bless Your most merciful Heart, for having given us Mary most holy as our mother, teacher and queen.  From the cross You placed us all in her hands.  You gave her a great heart, much wisdom and immense spiritual power.  May all humanity know her and pray to her!  May all permit themselves to be led by her to you, the Savior of all the world!  I place myself in her hands, as You did.  With this Mother I wish to live now, in the hour of my death, and for all eternity.

Amen.

Thank you, LuAnn, for this lovely reminder of today’s importance, and the reason why we should be celebrating and honoring our Blessed Mother’s Birthday! Thank you also for the reflections on why she is so important to Christians and for the beautiful prayer. Indeed, her beautiful Magnificat shows her total trust in God! I have always been so inspired and in awe of those beautiful words that Our Lady so lovingly and humbly spoke straight from the pureness of her heart and soul! My fervent prayer is to also have this total trust in God! Our Blessed Mother is our perfect role model. Thank you, dear God, for the gift of your servant, The Blessed Virgin Mary, so that we can be inspired by her faith, goodness, humility and total trust in You. Amen!

    1. Amen Laura! Our beautiful Blessed Mother deserves all our love and admiration. We will always be thankful to God for giving her to us!
      Blessings,
      LuAnn

  2. The header image is surely one of the most beautiful images of our Most Blessed Mother Mary. I couldn’t resist to save it. Thank you for reminding us all of the birth of the holy Virgin Mary.

    1. You are welcome Alex! I’m sure Mother Mary is even more beautiful than that! Happy Birthday to our lovely Maiden and Mother and Queen of Heaven!
      Blessings,
      LuAnn

    Dearest LuAnn,
Thank your for this beautiful tribute. It is important to mark that special day that bore the beginnings of our faith and reinforces yet again our deep connection with the blessed mother.
Hope you are well , enjoying your grand babies and getting your rest!😊

    1. Hi Susan! I am well, thank you for asking! I truly enjoy my grandsons, they are both such a blessing. I find it a challenge to get things done, but I try everyday to do my best and not let the things I didn’t get to bother me. Prayers and confession helps. 🙂
      Blessings,
      LuAnn

  4. An Ordinary Mom says:

I wasn’t aware that there was a known date for the Virgin Mary’s birthdate.

  5. Although the Sacred Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s birth, the Protoevangelium of James, written at the early years of the 2nd century, though not canonical, provides and reflects the development of Christian piety which maintained that St. Anne and St. Joachim (believed to be a wealthy member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel), grieved by their childlessness, prayed to God for a child. Their prayers were granted together with the promise that the child will commence God’s plan of salvation for the world.

Today’s feast may have originated somewhere in Syria or Palestine in the beginning of the sixth century when, after the Council of Ephesus, the devotion to the Mother of God was greatly intensified, especially in Syria. Her birth on the month of September may have been influenced by the fact that during this month, the Eastern Church begins its liturgical year….see Catholics Striving for Holiness.

We Catholics believe that Mary is the Mother of the Church founded by Jesus Christ and our Mother.
    Blessings,
    LuAnn

    1. Marian Catholic says:

The Nativity of the Virgin Mary can be also found in the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew (7th century). It bears similarities with the POJ and the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, the latter being a Gnostic work.
